    Liebe Blickwinkel Freund*innen,

About the project

What is the project about?

Comics for tolerance

The project Blickwinkel/point of view wants to emphasise the importance of encouraging people to inform themselves about political, social and historical topics so they can form their opinion independently.

The readers should realise that listening to each other and learning to accept different points of view is the key to understanding. Only then will living and working together be possible. This is especially important at times when right wing parties are receiving more and more support for stirring fear among the population and offering simple solutions.

The comics tell stories about people of various social backgrounds, ethnic origins and personal beliefs and their view on topics of public interest and situations of everyday life. Seemingly familiar topics are seen from a different angle and ideally might cause the readers to get interested in searching more information on the topics.

Interviews & research

To create authentic and lively stories, we will interview various people to illustrate cultural diversity, human rights, asylum, flight, migration, integration, religion, racism and prejudice. While interviewing the focus will be on personal experiences which relate to these topics. Based on the interviews we will work on concepts for the stories and the narrative perspective.

Networking & print

The comics will be released in single printed editions and distributed in various Austrian cities and local communities through active networking. In addition the comics will be issued as a comprehensive brochure comprising the collected comic stories and background information to each story. The brochure offers useful material for workshops dealing with topics such as migration, integration and asylum. The first edition of the comics and the brochure will be free of cost.

Blickwinkel/point of view

Aim: visualising different perspectives
         convey respect and tolerance

  • Focus on migration and flight, diversity and integration
  • Format: comic, stories based on interviews
  • Develop to awareness and information
  • Establish a supportive network
  • Address a broad section of the population
  • Develop media in the form of a comic for interactive teaching

What we hope to achieve

Strengthen tolerance

With the project Blickwinkel/point of view we want to contribute to an attitude of tolerance and cultural openness in society by enhancing awareness in the individual forming of opinions. The comics should encourage the readers to question generalizing statements and to view a situation from different angles.

It is very important to us that the output of the project Blickwinkel/point of view - the comics and the brochure - are actively used. So the comics will be actively distributed and used e.g. in workshops to approach the topics mentioned. Therefore we use a broad network of people for support. Personal contact to teachers and representatives of social organisations, schools, University College of Education and other educational institutions (VHS, BFI…)

The European dimension

-    Cultural diversity, asylum, flight and migration are topics that are currently
      relevant all across Europe.

-    The skill to actively and independently form one’s opinion as well as critically
approach information sources has become of main importance in education
     on a trans-European level.

-    In the course of the project we interview people in various European countries
(we already established contacts in Spain, Italy, Malta, Germany and Czech
Republic) as well as people with migrant background living in Austria.

Why we choose comics for our message?

Comics are perfectly suited to tell stories and convey information in an entertaining way. The sequence of images complemented by words can entertain and at the same time teach the readers by empathizing with the protagonists, their experience and opinions. Comics have a visual appeal and therefore attract readers more easily and the reader is able to make a faster connection with the topic.

Comics visualize:

  • Migration, flight and asylum
  • Conflict and fear
  • Cultural similarities and differences
  • Political and historical correlations

Target group

As a medium suitable for every age, the comic offers the adult readers a new view on topics they may already be familiar with.
For children and young people the comic is ideal to convey the topics in an enjoyable way so they get interested and possibly start discussing these topics. This is especially important as right wing parties and radicalised religious groups make an effort to address young people.
We primarily focus on addressing people, who are not actively looking for further background information by themselves.

Project Time Line

Collecting ideas & research (January - April 2016)
We interview people of various  social backgrounds, ethnic origins and personal attitudes, e.g. elderly people, people of  various religious beliefs, people living in the city and in rural areas, people from different professions, refugees of various age and gender. Based on these interviews the concepts for comic strips will be formed.

Graphic realization (January - August 2016)
Storyboard and creation of the comic strips
The comics are printed in 3 separate editions (folders)
Edition 1: May 2016
Edition 2: July 2016
Edition 3: September 2016

Active distribution (starting from May 2016)
Folders are distributed in Linz, Vienna, Graz and other Austrian cities and villages.(10000 copies/edition)

Issuing the brochure (May – August 2015)
Designing of further comic strips.
Preparation of educational content, e. g. interview transcripts, additional information to certain comics, questions for discussion, etc.
Layout of the brochure.

Distribution of the brochure (August/September 2016)
Print of the brochure (1000 copies), presentation at topic-relevant lectures, cinema showings, educational information events, at schools, associations, libraries and other institutions. It is our aim to see to it that the brochure is used as teaching material at schools as well as extracurricular.
Continuously (starting from January 2016)
Establishment and strengthening of a support and input network: interviewees, personal network, social media, press contacts, aid organisations, youth groups and educational institutions, voluntary support of friends and anyone who is interested

Background

Tolerance and solidarity rather than fear and agitation

Our world is colourful, it has always been diverse and it always will be. Borders shift, they become unclear or even vanish. Migration within and to Europe is a fact and if we can accept that, we can draw upon the consequent benefits. Thus, cultural exchange leads to new causes for thought and new perspectives.
Currently, right wing parties and nationalistic movements gain popularity. At the same time, the EU fails to agree on a common and sustainable concept for dealing with migration and the refugee situation. The “refugee crisis” seems to cause a social division in our society. Appeals to support aid actions on the one hand and agitation on the other hand dominate the print media and social networks.
From our point of view, active participation of the population is essential, if we want to achieve successful integration. Therefore it is our intention to contribute to strengthening tolerance amongst society.

The project team – who we are and what’s important to us

We are a motley bunch, each of us with a different professional background and experience. We are all striving after a society, characterised by transparency, respect and solidarity. We share the hope and respectively the belief that change is achievable as well as the willingness to do our share.

Blickwinkel Teil der Ausstellung "Transition" in Graz, 6.10.2016

Liebe Blickwinkel Freund*innen,
