The glaciers are dying. Help us show this!
Using drone and aerial photography we want to document the disappearance of glaciers and make the extreme dissolution of the ice visible for everybody.
About the project
What is the project about?
The glaciers are dying. The ongoing rise in temperatures, especially in the summer months, will make around 60% of the current glacier volume in Austria disappear by 2050. We want to document the fast and irrevocable melt of the glaciers in order to demonstrate to today’s decision makers how quickly and thoroughly the melting will end in the total loss of ice. And we want to at least retain images of the glaciers for future generations. Within the project we will gather monitoring data of the most affected glaciers. In parallel to the usual measurements taken, drone and aerial photography will help to document the ever faster disintegration of the glaciers. We will share the results via social media, making the retreat of the glaciers visible for everybody. Our photographs allow the scientific documentation of a process never before described by humans.

Why would someone support this project?
Traditional measurement methods are no longer feasible for documenting the ever larger areas of disintegrating ice. Glacier inventories, which up to now recorded glacier surface area every 10 years or so, would need to be done every year given the annual 5% to 10% loss of area as happened last year.
Photographic time series are important to understand the rapid retreat on an emotional level. Normal research projects may take years to submit and get accepted. Time in which part of the glaciers will already be dead and gone. Crowdfunding is to help us produce a continuous documentation of the disintegration of the ice giants. Glaciers will disappear, but we want to retain their memory.
What happens with the money if financing was successful
We will allow researchers to produce unique pictures of Austrian glaciers, analyse them and share them with you on social media.
We will fund:
- travel
- working hours in the field
- data analysis
- publication of the results on social media

The Gletscher und Klima association was founded in 2012 to support long-term monitoring programs. Such measurements over several decades are the basis for documenting today’s disintegration of our glaciers. Scientist of the Year 2023, PD MMag. Dr. Andrea Fischer, plus numerous other internationally respected researchers are involved in the project.
