What is the project about?
German language is a huge barrier in terms of integration process. Actually 64 asylum seeker are housed in our accommodation for refugees, located in St. Egyden/Velden. Our guests are originated from Syria, Iraq, Armenia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan and Libya. All of them need our professional help and support to quickly achieve an appropriate language competence.
We are persuaded of language as basic requirement for successful integration in our society. The required funds are going to be used goal-oriented: further language mediators are skilled as well as refugees are supported in taking examinations.

Since September 2016 64 asylum seekers are housed in the accommodation for refugees, located in St. Egyden/Community of Velden am Wörthersee. After supplying the refugees with what is absolutely necessary, now the time has come for specific and focussed advancement and training of language competence. Therefore we established a cooperation with the University of Klagenfurt (research and advisory centre for victims of violence).
We figured out a project schedule that defines clear goals. These goals are going to be achieved through following activities:
- Development of a concept to advance language skills of refugees
- Enquiry of actual language level of all refugees
- Grouping the different language levels - from alphabetisation pending to advanced speakers
- Course of instruction for a team of volunteers (done by professional trainers in several workshops)
- Implementation of German lessons (weekly) according to the different competence levels, accompanied by the volunteers
- Focused realization of a "learning-by-doing"-approach
- Additional german lessons hosted by the volunteers
- Official examinations at the University of Klagenfurt after reaching specific language levels
- Highly skilled refugees are supported by a special programme (5 refugees)
The different appointments of german lessons are posted in the accommodation and attendance in courses will be controlled. As and when required, additional teaching and learning material (both traditional material as well as digital material) is placed at the disposal. Keen and successful learners are rewarded (coupons), the progress of learning groups is announced (names anonymized)
Specific learning contents correspond to subject areas, that will help as guidance in coping everyday life.
Our team:
The project is coordinated, managed and supervised by Dr. Margit Heissenberger by order of the working group for education (Community of Velden). Team members are 20 volunteers from the geographic surroundings.
Sustainability:
One goal of our project is to bring up the volunteers to teaching competence. Different techniques concerning alphabetisation and basic know-how of language are sampled and are getting currently improved. Feedback loops between professional trainers, volunteers and asylum seekers support the exchange of experiences and an evolving process.
